The United States & Japan

Welcome back from New York everyone!! I hope you had a great time. This week's blog is very easy. Please tell me three things you found different between Japan and New York. Was it the food? The people? The atmosphere? etc.

Please tell me three things and explain why you think they are different. Give examples if you need to.

  1. It was first time for me to go NY.
I felt so cold when i arrived at J.F.K airport.Night and morning especially cold. Also I thought sky is more wider and higher than Japan.
Then many things was very big.Food, building and people!I think that because America had been big country and it had several colonies so there is room in the land.In such a large land, farming and stock farming are possible. So there is enough food left over.Americans eat lots of food,as a result they became big.
Is American's law rough? They ignored the speed limit sign and used cellphone during they drove.
But I love their personality because they are very kind and friendly.
I was surprised all of America.

  2. My host family was kind a vegetarian. They don't have pork and beef.
Their diet was the most different thing for me. The host father is French so they usually had bread and had fish or chicken with it. I had lots of vegetables and fruits. To tell the truth,I never got constipated!

Weather was also different.I think it was drier than Japan.
It was chilly but not too cold.I really liked it.

Squirrels were everywhere! In Japan we hardly see them in the city.
NYC had more natuer than I had thought.

In the suburb,a car is necessary unlike the suberb where I live.

  3. I felt buildings in NY were bigger than in Japan. I don't know why they were big. I think American are big and high, so they need to make big buildings. If you have another opinion, please tell me it.
The subway was also different. The seats of American subway were look like Sinkansen in Japan, and passengers were talking with loud voice in the subway. It was surprised but I like it, because my voice is also loud!
The meal was the most different thing for me. When I stayed at host family'house, our dinner was pizza. It was so delicious, but after having dinner, my host mother brought us many oranges, cookies, and popcorn!!
I was surprised many things in NY, but I thought American lifestyle matches me.

  4. I'm sorry for late post a comment on here:(

I thought buildings were taller than Japan. (I agree with Ai's opinion.) I also thought the reason why NY's buildings are taller than Japan. My answer is earthquake. I have never listened "Earthquake happened in NY." In Japan, earthquakes happen every year, so we can't build tall buildings.

And I was surprised NY people. When we wanted to take a picture, all most NY people said "Can I take a picture?". In Japan, if I want to take a picture, I have to say "Excuse me, can you take a picture?" to someone. However, NY people said it from them. I was so glad!

Next, I thought Japanese are fopperer than NY people. Maybe Japan and America's fashion sence are different, but Japanese are wearing many kind of clothes. NY people's fashion styles were simple! I like it:)

I want to go to NY again!!!!

    1. Risa,I agree with you about why are buldings of America taller than Japan.
when I stayed in host family's house there are many ornaments made by glass so I think if here was Japan,it's dangerous!

  5. Sorry to be late:(

    NY was sooooo wonderful!
When I got there,I didn't feel here was America.
BUT next morning I really feel "I'm in NY!America!".
I looked out of window, there were a big garden and beautiful blue sky.It was diffrent from Japan.

In Japan,I can't see very big garden or house like America.
Because the land is very very big!Of course, there are so many people in there, but it's a sparsely populated.

Also I feel American people are friendly.
When I bought things at the first time, the clerk said
"How are you?" to me.I was confused lol
    I think it's good culture:)fun!
I don't know why are American people more friendly than Japanese people.I'm interested in this thing. I want to think about it.
Most suprising thing was a toilet!!!!!
There was big opening between doors of toilet.
I think there are crimes in America so it's for safety.
Japanese toilet is most beautiful and comfortable i think!

Anyway,I had a great experience in there.

  6. I am sorry for late posting.

I agree with some of classmates opinion. However I also found other difference
    between Japan and NY.

What my first impression was to enter into the house with
our shoes on. I knew that is one of American custom but there was sense of
discomfort. I was afraid that my host mother's pretty house is getting dirty.

Next, I thought that the Americans are active. I was thinking about this
(Japanese are passive and the foreigners are active) before I went to NY. And
    that was true in NY.

Usually, when Japanese saw foreigners, and people don't call out. However when
some American saw us, and they called out to us "konnnichiwa!" (said Hello in
Japanese.) It made me happy and smile, because I thought they welcomed us!

I also felt the flow of time was slow compare from Japan. The country side where
our home stay city was very quiet and the air was clean. I could see a lot of
small stars that can't see in Japan in the night. In Midtown, there was no
hurry, and atmosphere was not involved in the BIG city. I thought it is unlike
    Tokyo or Yokohama.

I went to NY and I found many good points and not good points
about NY. Also I found Japanese good and bad one. I grew to love New York, I
love Japan more than that. I want to know about Japan first. Then I want to know
    about NY more.

The school trip to NY gave me a lot of things!

  7. I am sorry to late, Huskey.

I read the comments of you.I think so, too!!
And comments bring back memories in NY!!

1.I thought their diet was different from Japan.
My host father was typical example.
He almost never eats vegetable for 2days.
Their diet was not well balanced.

2.It was first time to give the tip to someone.
There is no tip system in Japan.
I was enjoyed tipping in NY.

3.The view in NY was wonderful more than japan!
Almost every view was wonderful, but especialy night view was fine!!
I impressed in top of the rock!!

  8. I'm sorry to late!

    1. I think New Yorker likes spending time with nature. There is a central park in the middle of Manhattan. Many people were enjoying there. Also, I and my host family went to temple. There were a lot of trees and brook. They often go to the temple to commune with nature.
    2. New Yorker don't care about foreigner(They are not kind for foreigner). In the hamburger shop, I could not understand what a clerk said.I did a "I don't understand"face, but he just shrugged his shoulders. He looked troublesome because of me.
    3. There are many many beautiful, cute, pretty womens and tall, handsome, white tooth mens!!New Yorker looked beautiful.I don't know why are Japanese baby face.(In the shop, the clerk asked me "how old are you?" I answered "I'm sixteen."Then,She gave a laughter.I don't know why!)

  9. I'm sorry,Huskey. I forgot to post a comment.

1.I felt the sky of New York is higher than Japan. I was surprised, but I like New York sky. I took a lot of pictures of the sky!
2.In New York, peaple enjoyed talking on the train. Peaple don't care about other peaple. It's sometimes good and sometimes bad for me.
3.The buildings and view are very pretty! It's look like a picture book. I want to live in New York! but I love Japan. Thank you.

  10. I'm so sorry to be late! I think New York City has many different points to Japan but it is very interesting for me.

    1. New York City (especially, Midtown) almost not has vending machines. I don't see it on the road at the free time. (but I founded it in building). Japan has so more vending machines. I think this difference is related to peace and order.

    2. NYC has many American flags. In Japan, display a flag only memorial day so I was very wonder, but I don't know why many flags in NYC...

    3. At the meals of the home stay, host mother cooked many dishes and it's were quite. This time was very fun for me. In Japan, one to three dishes and rice is basicaly meal.

I enjoyed this school trip! I want to visit again and find more difference.

  11. One is the staff of shop. IN Japan, usually only "May I help you?" but in America, staff talked to me "Hi! How are you? or where are you from?" etc...

Another one is the clothes. Their fashion is simple and dark color. Japanese likes colorful clothes.

Last one is all think in America are very big. In Japan, we usually order three or four pizza because Japanese pizza is small but American pizza is very big. I ate pizza with my host family then I was full when I ate three piece of pizza.

  12. 1.American people are friendly. At first,I was very nervous but My host parents are talk to me and host brothers also became attached to us soon.My hostfamily also said Japanese people are shy.

2.In America,There were a lot of american flags everywhere.I surprised that there were many American flags beside each graves.

3.The view in NY is amazing.Top of the rock, Night of Times square and so on.I was surprised.

  13. ・I went to various shops and was surprised at clerks.
At M&M, when I was cashing the clerk suddenly started dancing with BGM in the shop. In Japan, that is probably impossible. It was fun for me but I wondered how do other Japanese people feel aout it.
・At host's hose, there are many table lumps. Some rooms use only table lumps. I was surprised. In Japan, almost all of the rooms in the house have ceiling lights.
・In Japan, I saw cars with various colors. However, I thought that the cars in NY were not so colorful (I am not sure...). I sometimes found blue or red cars but Black or white(silver) cars were more.

I had a super wonderful time in NY. I want to visit there again and to find more differences from Japan.

  14. ・There are many vegetarians in the United States. My host family was also vegetarian. I was surprised because I said about it to my friends , then many my friends said ‘me too!’It's rare in Japan.
・There were many American flags and Clothes of American design. I think because American assert strongly.
・I thought almost American don't mind clothes. Many American think warmth is more important than to dress up, I guess.
Japanese think to dress up is more important than warmth. Especially, High school girls like us.
    We always wear skirts.

I had so nice and sweet time in NY.
I want to go there again after improve my English!!

  15. I agree with some of your opinion!

1,Mochiko, I agree with your opinion about clothe's color. When I was paying at super market, the shop staff she recognized that I am Japanese the moment she saw me! I asked the reason why she could recognized I am Japanese. The reason was my clothes' color! At that time I am wearing purple, pink and red clothes. And she knows about きゃりーぱみゅぱみゅ so I guess that she has equation, Colorful clothe=きゃりーぱみゅぱみゅ=Japanese Girl

2, I found that American people get hot easily. The weather in NY was cooler than JPN. Some of people were wearing cost and muffler but some of them were wearing T-shirts especially children! I was really surprised. My host brothers wore T-shirts and play outside! Unbelievable~

3, The American receipt was really long! I was really surprised when I received long receipt at clothe shop because I didn't buy a lot at one time. I took time to put receipt into my wallet~

Finally, I enjoyed and had a lot of experiences in New York City.
I have favorite song that describe New York City. The song says ," In NY,concrete jungle where dreams were made of,there is nothing you can't do. These streets will make you feel brand new,the big lights will inspire you". This is exactly what I felt in NEW YORK CITY!!!!!!! The dream I mede in NY is "going back to NEW YORK "!

I think NEW YORK is my another sky(my second hometown)!
    I will definitely back!
I miss everything in NEW YORK!
    I ♥ NY

  16. I was really enjoyed myself all the time in New York!
And the three things I found is first, the American are more positive and cherrful than Japanese.I was kissed by my hostfamily when we met each other for the first time,I was a little shocked at first even I knew it's very normal for American.but because this kind of action, the relationship between us became very close, and I felt my hostfamily are just like my real family at last!
The second thing is the American food are really unhealthy! The size of the food are very very big!The milkshake I drank was super sweet!!I could only drank half of it and I felt very bad.And there were almost no vegetable for each meal like Japan.I missed vegetables when I was in NewYork!
The last thing is the streets in NewYork are more colorful than Japan. The post and the lights of buildings in timesquare are colorful and the night view was just like a big picture .I like it because it let me felt full of energy and excited
I want to go there again!!I miss NY<3

  18. I am sorry to comment late.

    I enjoyed myself in NYC!
The three things I found that different from Japan are:
1.The balance of vegetables and meat was not good. When I was in my hostfamily,I could eat meat only. That made me feel bad sometimes. My hostfamily also ate dinner when they want to eat.

2.American live freely. When I was in my hostfamily,I got up at 11o'clock and we went to shopping without eating breakfast or lunch. In the evening,we went to bowling,we played until about 1o'colck at night. They seems like doing anything they want to do at anytime! But I love their lifestyle !
I also found the services that staff give to customers are not politely as Japan.I think because they think everyone is the same, and they live freely!

3.American are more outgoing than Japanese.I sometimes asked about how to go somewhere, the people were all friendly to me.When I was walking on the street, some people smiled freiendly to me,and some people also talked to us.That made me feel warm, like at my hometown.

  19. I enjoyed the school trip in New York.
I found the difference between Japan and New York.

1.When I moved from White Plains to Manhattan by my host family's car,I thought the road was very wide,so I said to my host family "A road is larger than Japan." Then, host Mother said"California is larger." Therefore,I surprised it.

2.My host family did not shut the key of their house. The interval of a house and a house was larger than Japan and Neighbor relations were good, but Japanese people worry about this situation.

3.All things were big!!!For example, the hamburger and the cheesecake were large and those were cheap.I was surprised that the night view was also huge panorama.Anyway, all things were big!!!

I miss NY, and I want to travel many countries.

  20. I found three difference between NY and Japan.

First, the sky was larger than Japan. I think NY is flat land and no obstacles, for example an electric wire,a tree,a high-rise building,so we felt sky was wide. Japan has many unility poles. When I looked up at the sky in japan, many electric wires were seen in the sky and I felt the sky was narrow.

Second, many New Yorkers didn't wait when they cross at a pedestrian crossing even though the light turned red. I was surprised to see it! I think American's character is active,so It is different from Japan.

third,American food is strongly taste than Japanese food. I don't know Wwy American food is salty, but I like both of Anerican food and Japanese food!

  21. ・When I went to buy my meal in a supermarket ,a cleak spoke to me and we talked with a lot.I tought American are very friendly, but some cleaks were blunt. When I paid at the register ,I was surprised cleak 's attitude.

・Second , I thought American food and drinks are unhealthy!! I bought "fanta" and I was surprised the taste of it.It was so sweet for me.Furthermore, american sweets have strange and deep color. I received cookies from host family ,it was deep orange and very sweet.

・Third ,american treasures contact with nature. My host family 's house has a very large yard and there were many animals in there.Host father cherished and respected them.furthermore ,many people love Central Park and spending time in there.

I could have a very good time in NY . I want to go there again!
